Blogoversary Day 3: Amy Tintera

We're already three days into the celebration! Eee! I hope you're enjoying it so far, and I have a feeling if you are enjoying it, you're going to continue enjoying it, because today I have an interview with debut author Amy Tintera, author of the action-packed and fun REBOOT! Enjoy!

Interview with Amy Tintera

1. Despite their non-human state, the characters in REBOOT are thoroughly authentic and relatable as human beings. With that being said, which character in REBOOT would you say you relate most with?

Well, I’m going to sound like a crazy person, but I think I relate to my main character, Wren, the most. She’s definitely crazier than me, and I’m certainly not a badass, but I can relate to how she wants to turn off her emotions to protect herself. She also only opens up to certain people, and that’s something I do as well.

2. Speaking of the characters in REBOOT  which one was your favorite to write/develop?

The love interest, Callum, was probably my favorite character to write. When I created him I decided to forget about what I thought other people liked in boy characters, and just write the kind of boy I liked. Writing a light-hearted guy in the dark REBOOT world was a lot of fun.

3. Where did you get the idea for REBOOT?

I actually got the idea for Wren first! I heard her voice in my head, telling me she’d been dead for 178 minutes, and I built the plot of REBOOT around her. I knew I wanted to write a story where there weren’t defined “good guys” and “bad guys,” so I kept that in mind while I created REBOOT.

4. Recently film rights for REBOOT have been optioned by Fox (this movie would be awesome!). How have your experiences with REBOOT being optioned for film been? Is it surreal to have your debut novel optioned for film before it's even released?

It’s incredibly surreal! My agent actually called me the day after HarperCollins bought the book to tell me Fox wanted to option the film rights. I never expected it to happen so quickly!

The screenwriter is working on the script now, so let’s all hope for good things to come of it!

5. While we're on the topic of REBOOT being optioned for film, what would you say is your dream cast for REBOOT?

I’m going to pass on this question, because 1) I don’t know and 2) If the movie actually gets cast I don’t want the actors thinking they weren’t my first choice!

6. What are your writing habits and schedule like? Are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you set yourself a daily writing goal?

I’m a full-time writer, so my schedule is pretty relaxed. I run errands and workout in the morning, and then in the early afternoon I start writing. Sometimes I write into the night (with a dog-walking break), depending on how much time I wasted on Twitter.

I’m somewhere between a plotter and a pantser, since I usually sketch out the very basic plot details before I start writing. But I usually start a novel not knowing much of what is going to happen!

I used to have a 1,500-2,000 words a day goal, but I’ve mostly let go of that. If I feel like I’m slacking off I might make a goal, but for the most part I’m pretty good about buckling down and getting work done.

7. Are there any future novels you're working on that you can tell us about?

I have many ideas swirling around in my head, but nothing I can talk about yet! I will say that one day I hope to write a YA contemporary romance, which would obviously be very different from REBOOT. But that’s probably at least a few years off.

8. If you were to become a REBOOT, what number do you think you'd be?

I want to say I’d be over 120 (the badasses), but I think I’d be an Under-60. I’ve never been very athletic, so I can’t really imagine myself hanging out with Wren and her group!

9. Reboots could be seen as being almost half robot, half zombie (all awesome). Are you a fan of zombie and robot films, TV shows, and books? If so, what are your favorites?

I am a big fan of most things sci-fi! BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is one of my favorite shows ever, and when my agent called to offer me representation she said Reboots reminded her a little of Cylons. I’m also a big fan of THE WALKING DEAD!

10. Who would win in an epic battle: Wren or The Terminator?

Wren! The Terminator might have more strength, but Wren is fast and sharp. She would take him down. :)

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

Hi! I’m Amy Tintera, and I write novels for young adults. I grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in journalism. After receiving a masters in film at Emerson College I moved to Los Angeles, where I promptly discovered I didn’t enjoy working in the film industry, and went back to my first love, writing.

HarperCollins/HarperTeen will publish my debut, REBOOT, a young adult novel about teens in a future Texas who reboot after death and are subsequently forced into slavery. Film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000. I am represented by Emmanuelle Morgen at Stonesong.
